Course Syllabus
- TITLE OF COURSE: CS1703- Word Processing Applications
- COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Three credit hours of lecture. The course offers a graduated progression from guided tutorials to independent challenges for creating, designing, and producing professional documents using word processing software. Students learn and use the Word skills required in the job market. Students build technology skills in combination with working on realistic projects and critical-thinking assignments. The course aligns to the Microsoft Application Specialist certification exams. It builds technology skills and reinforces writing and critical-thinking abilities, culminating assessments require software mastery and independent problem-solving. For each unit of
credit, a minimum of three hours per week with one of the hours for class and
two hours for studying/preparation outside of class is expected.
- PROGRAM AND/OR DEPARTMENT MISSION STATEMENT:The mission of the Business Administrative Professionals program is consistent with the mission of Seward County Community College/Area technical School. The program will provide students with quality learning opportunities and experiences to meet the diverse, changing needs for the development of better futures.

- Textbook will be selected when course is offered.
- Microsoft Office software.

- COURSE OUTCOMES:
Upon acceptable completion of the course competencies and an average of mailable on performance assessments and 85 percent or higher on objective assessments, the student will be able to:

- COURSE OUTLINE:
- Review use of Microsoft Windows including identify parts of computer, use the mouse, choose commands, complete computer exercises, customize Quick Access Toolbar, and customize settings
- Create, print, and edit documents
- Format and customize characters and paragraphs—sort, border, shading, tabs, clipboard
- Apply formatting and insert objects—columns, hyphenation, images, pull quotes, text boxes, word art
- Maintain documents—folders; insert file; copy, move, rename documents
- Create tables and SmartArt—perform calculations in table
- Merge documents—data source; main document; merge documents, envelopes, and labels
- Customize paragraphs and pages—inserting numbers and bullets, multilevel list numbering, headers and footers
- Proof documents—spell check, grammar check, readability and word count, custom dictionary, translation, screen tips
- Automate and customize formatting—autocorrect, quick parts, fields
- Customize and navigate in a document—themes, styles, hyperlinks
- Insert special features and references—non-breaking space, footnotes, citations, bibliographies
- Create specialized tables and indexes—table of contents, indexes, table of figures, table of authority
- Work with shared documents—inserting comments and tracking changes and combining documents
- Protect and prepare documents for distribution using digital signatures

- Hands on project assignments
- Objective and performance assessments
- Measurement of SCCC/ATS Outcomes will be assessed through project assignments, examinations, and demonstration of workplace basic skills in working with others, attendance and punctuality, etc.
